| Auto Donation Program |
About
Our auto donation program started in December 2003, being there were no other charities taking advantage of receiving and sale of donated cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and motor homes. Within the first year we took in about 65 cars, most cars were beyond repair, but we received some very nice cars too. The cars we received came to us while we were getting the appropriate licenses from the State and local governments so we had about 45 cars, trucks, and 2 motor homes that we auctioned off on a Sunday morning here on campus. That day alone we raised more that $10,000. Each and every vehicle that comes thru our program goes thru the school’s auto repair class, this class evaluates each car as to its potential value and what costs will be involved to get the vehicle ready for sale. This helps the students to understand what to look for when buying a car, and perhaps how to repair what’s wrong with their car when problems arise.
In 2005 California state law changed so that cars that are donated to a charity can be “written off” tax wise to the amount that the charity sells the car for, UNLESS the charity uses the car in its operation. Our auto mechanics class qualifies as being used in our operation, so the donor car receives full tax relief from their donation. |
How to donate a vehicle
Donated vehicles can be driven to the campus (2201 Pine St.) or, if needed, the school will provide free towing. The donors are provided with a written letter of donation that can be used for tax deduction purposes. According to IRS rules, the value of the donation must be determined by the donor. However, the school can assist the donor in finding suitable references that can provide documentation concerning value. Because Napa Christian is a non-profit school with proper 501 C (3) recognition, the value of the donation can be taken as a direct charitable donation. |
